Long time Palatka resident, Otha Francis Powell, 85, passed away on Friday, February 22, 2013 at Five Oaks Rest Home in Welaka following an extended illness. He was born on July 4, 1927 in Montgomery, AL and grew up in Mobile, AL. He was the oldest son of Otha F. Powell, Sr. and Kathleen Branam Powell.
After graduating in 1945 from Murphy High School in Mobile, he enlisted in the United States Navy V-5 Aviation Cadet program, which sent him to Mississippi College and Tulane University in Louisiana. Following his honorable military discharge in 1947 Powell attended Auburn University in Alabama, graduating in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and the Auburn Band.
In 1950 he joined the Engineering Department of Hudson Pulp Paper Corp. (now Georgia Pacific Corp.), resigning as Engineering Manager in 1967 to accept a similar position with Georgia Kraft Company in Rome, GA. After a three year tenure in Rome, he became a member of the management team of Boise Cascade at their paper mill in DeRidder, LA.
Powell left Boise Cascade in 1976 to enter the motel business in Plaquemine, LA, returning to the Palatka area in 1979 as owner/operator of The Oaks Motel. After retiring in 1985 he continued his association with the paper industry by working as a consultant on various engineering projects with Georgia Pacific.
Powell was a long time Rotarian, serving as President of the Palatka and DeRidder, LA Rotary Clubs and as a member of the Plaquemine, LA club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. He also served as President of the DeRidder and the Plaquemine Chambers of Commerce. He sat on the City of Palatka Zoning Board of Appeals and volunteered with the American Cancer Society. He was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Palatka, giving freely of his time as an Elder, Deacon, choir member, soloist, Sunday School teacher, and Men’s Breakfast cook. He was also an Elder in the Rome, GA and DeRidder Presbyterian churches.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dudley Powell.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years Kathryn “Kay” Powell; a son and daughter-in-law, Pete and Judy Powell of Jacksonville, two daughters and sons-in-law, Pam and Mark Anderegg of Rincon, GA and Kathy and Eric Marshall of Brunswick, GA; a nephew, Warren Powell of Burlington, NC; and seven grandchildren.
