Esther Ruth Black, 93, of Florahome, passed away, Friday, April 21, 2017 at Putnam Community Medical Center following an extended illness.

She was a native of Leesville, SC and had been a resident of Florahome for the past 42 years coming from Leesville. She had worked as a secretary for the Department of Defense retiring in 1974 following 30 years of service. Ruth was a faithful member of Oak Ave Baptist Church in Florahome where she served as church historian, clerk and other positions as her health allowed her. She enjoyed flower gardening, bird watching, going to church and spending time with friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold Huit Black; a daughter, Kathy Ruth Black; a son Dickie Huit Black; parents, Joseph M. and Edith Viola Leaphart Hallman; four brothers, A. P. Hallman, Carroll Hallman, Victor Hallman and Odell Hallman and two sisters, Mary Julia Mires and Eula Mae Long.

Surviving are her granddaughter, Diana Ruth Shifflett and husband, John Shifflett of Charlottesville, VA and grandson, Wallace Lee Shipp of Winchester, VA.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 24, 2017 at Masters Funeral Home of Palatka with Pastor Tim Plymel officiating. Interment will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one prior to the service.
