Lila M. Messer

Lila Mae Driggers Messer, 86, of Palatka, passed away on Sunday, March 22, 2020 at The Ponce Therapy Care Center in St. Augustine following an extended illness.

Born at home in Bostwick, she had been a resident of Putnam County for most of her life, growing up in Bostwick and later living in Palatka. She had worked as a floral designer for Palm Florist and Ralph’s House of Flowers and later owned and operated her own flower shop on West River Road: Riverside Flower Shop. She was proud of her service as a part of the Democratic Woman’s Club in Putnam County and had served as president in 1979-1980. She had a passion for wildflowers. She was an avid reader and followed politics closely, staying actively informed of current events.

She is preceded in death by her husband, George Messer; and her parents, Everett and Pitie Driggers.

She is survived by her five daughters, Janice Freeman, Joan Turner, Melanie Messer, Merry Cook, Wendy Messer; a son, Mark Messer; a sister, Faye Minotti; eight grandchildren; five great grandchildren; one great-great grandson and numerous nieces and nephews.

A private burial took place at Bostwick Cemetery in Bostwick.

She was born and lived her very young life in the Bridgeport area on the St. Johns River. Many generations of her family looked to the river to provide their livelihood and recreation. She had concerns about the preservation of the river for future generations. Therefore memorial contributions may be made to St. Johns Riverkeeper, Inc., 2800 University Blvd. N., Jacksonville, FL 32211.

Messages of encouragement or sympathy may be expressed in her online guestbook at
