James T. Gainer, 94, of Palatka went to be with the Lord Monday, May 31, 2021 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka following an extended illness.
James was born in Dade City, Florida and had been a resident of Palatka for the past 74 years, coming from Port St. Joe. He was one of the remaining veterans of World War II having served in the United States Marine Corps. In 1979 he retired from Hudson Pulp & Paper Corp. in Palatka as a bag machine adjustor after 30 ½ years of service. He was a member of Union Local #641 in Palatka. He had owned and operated Gainer’s Auto Trim in Palatka for many years.
As a member of the Southside Baptist Church in Palatka, he was a part of Seniors for Christ and had served on the Buildings and Grounds Committee and as a Trustee. He had been recognized as a “Shining Star” by the Palatka Daily News for the work he and Dr. Eric Jump did at the Community Gardens. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening, and working on antique cars. He also enjoyed raising cattle and exotic birds.
Preceding him in death were his mother, Lunie Gainer; his father, Walter Gainer; three sisters, Jocie Mae Knowles, Juanita Gainer, and Virginia Woods; and a brother, Bob Gainer.
Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Ernestine Gainer; three daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Darrell Wooten of Interlachen, Lorraine and Rick Greathouse of Middleburg, and Wanda and Scott Caiola of Palatka; a brother, Loren Gainer of Woodstock, GA; two step sons and spouses, Russ and Linda Arnold of Palatka, and Bill and Bobbette Arnold of Meridian, MS; a sister-in-law, Odeal Gainer of Panama City; the mother of his children, Donnie Osborne of Interlachen; 13 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 18 great great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, June 3rd at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka. The funeral will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 4th at Southside Baptist Church in Palatka with Pastor Shaun Thomas and Deacon Vance Dampier officiating. The service will be live-streamed at www.vimeo.com/mastersfuneralhome. Burial will follow at Palatka Memorial Gardens with military honors bestowed by the U.S. Marine Corps.
