Edward R. “Ed” Griffin, 90, of Palatka passed away Saturday, August 31, 2019 in Orange Park Medical Center following a very brief illness.
Ed was born in Orange Lake in Marion County and had lived in Putnam County for most of his life, having lived in the Melrose and Grandin area, and later in Palatka. He was a 1946 graduate of Melrose High School. In 1984 he retired from the Florida National Guard as a First Sergeant after 36 years of service. In 1987 he retired from the State of Florida where he had worked for 41 years, mostly as a Civil Engineer, designing highways and bridges. He was certified by the State as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) He later worked for Reynolds, Smith and Hills, Inc. for over 29 years, retiring in 2017.
He stayed active his whole life and was an avid hunter. He was a frequent visitor at CP Deli and Niko’s. He enjoyed having his friends over for his annual peanut boil. He attended Trinity United Methodist Church in Palatka.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Shadrick and Elma Cook Griffin; and two sisters, Cleve Cicardo and Perlie Eubanks.
Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Charlotte Griffin of Palatka; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael and Gretchen Griffin of Palatka; a daughter, Cindy Hamrick of Jacksonville; a step-daughter and spouse, Cassie and Troy Nettles of Palatka; a step-son and spouse, Troy and Jenni Smith of Ponte Vedra; two sisters, Maebell Mikell and Priscilla Kilgore, both of Palatka; a brother and sister-in-law, Pat and Polly Griffin of Palatka; a special friend, Henry Lamar Florence of Palatka; four grandchildren and spouse, Jordan and Kristi Hamrick, Baley Hamrick, Lacey Hamrick and Noah Prater; two great grandchildren, Layla Hamrick and Laric Hamrick; and numerous step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6th at Trinity United Methodist Church with Pastor John Bennett officiating. The family will begin receiving friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in Paran Cemetery in Grandin.
