James Sherwood “Fishhook” Barker, 81, of Interlachen passed away unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 17, 2020 at Putnam Community Medical Center. He was a native of Baltimore, Maryland and had been a resident of Interlachen for the past 27 years coming from Ft. Lauderdale. Jim had served honorably in the U. S. Army. He had worked as a Telephone Communications Technician in Ft Lauderdale and later worked as a Security Officer at St. Johns River State College in Palatka. He was a member of New Beginning Baptist Fellowship in Palatka. Jim was an avid fisherman and enjoyed modulating on his c. b. radio where his call name was “Fishhook” for over 60 years and enjoyed hunting.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Barker and his parents, James and Evelyn Barker, Sr.

Surviving are his wife of 28 years, Susan Barker; a son, Clay (Cheryl) Barker; two step-daughters; two step-sons; a sister, Beverly (Phil) Waigand; 14 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; a niece; a great niece and a great nephew.

A celebration of life will be 4:00 pm Saturday, Jan. 25, 2020 at New Beginning Baptist Fellowship with Pastor Rick McClure officiating. Military Honors will be bestowed by the Florida National Guard. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
