PASTOR HARRY VARNADOE

Pastor Harry Varnadoe, 94, of Hollister became absent from the body and present with the Lord Sunday, October 4, 2020 at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born August 24, 1926 to James Paschal and Effie Mae Leaptrot Varnadoe at their home on Gillis Street in Palatka. He grew up in a home with 5 brothers and 3 sisters, he also had one half-brother and two half-sisters. Growing up through the depression years was not easy since their dad passed away in 1936. Their mother, with holy determination kept her family together. Each child went to work to help as soon as they were old enough. These experiences helped make Harry the man he became. He served honorably in the U.S. Navy during WWII from August 1944 to August 1947, he also trained in Underwater Demolition. When Jesus came into his life, he was changed eternally. He went to college and seminary to prepare for the ministry for which God called him. He served as pastor at Nocatee, Francis and Bunnell. After retirement he was involved in teaching, preaching and ministering wherever the opportunity came. He especially liked teaching new Christians the basics of the Christian faith. His last ministry was serving 3 years at Solaris Heath Care, visiting and sharing weekly devotionals with each resident and staff member.
In his younger years he liked to fish and hunt but as a Christian his priorities changed to doing the will of God for his life. He liked to garden and was an avid reader. He also expressed his thoughts and convictions regularly to the editor of the Palatka Daily News.
Harry is survived by his wife of 72 years, Merle Cannon Varnadoe; sons, Jeff (Lora Lee) Varnadoe of East Palatka, Keith Varnadoe of Colorado; daughter, Marsha Rain of St. Augustine; 4 grandchildren, Lindsay (Todd) Vanlandingham, Scott Varnadoe, Kailah Rain and Taylor Rain; two sisters, Mary McDonald and Betty Golden; three special sisters-in-law, Ona McLean, Edna Bell, and Betty Sue Varnadoe; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Harry was preceded in death by his brothers, Eddie, James, Marion, Dalton, and Richard Varnadoe, and Robert Penouilh; and sisters, Eula Marshall, Eunice Nelson, and Barbara Bridges.
Celebration of Harry’s life will be at 12 noon Saturday October 10th in the Family Life Center at Francis Baptist Church. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 10 a.m. until time of the celebration. Pastors Buddy Lynch, Jason Sharp
and David Beauchamp will officiate. Burial will follow in Peniel Cemetery with military honors bestowed by the U.S. Navy.
