February 20, 1950 - July 4, 2021

David Alan Samball, 71, of Palatka passed away Sunday, July 4, 2021 at Putnam Community Medical Center in Palatka following an extended illness.

David was born in Hickory, North Carolina to Albert and Eleanor (Strickland) Samball. He had been a resident of Putnam County for the past 50 years. David's career began in house painting and construction, followed by some years with the Chesser & Strickland Sand Co. But a majority of his profession was spent with Sheffield Steel Corporation, where he was a master welder, fitter, and leadman.

David had a strong work ethic, kind disposition, and loving heart. His sons describe him as a great and supportive family man and his humanity extended to many others, some of whom called him, Dad. He served as youth pastor at the Hollister Baptist Church for many years. David grew up in Gainesville, Florida and played saxophone in the Gainesville High School Band. He loved to tell the story of his close friendship with Tom Petty and his membership in Tommy’s first band. He was a member of New Beginning Baptist Fellowship in Palatka. An accomplished bass fisherman, he particularly loved the time spent on Rodman Reservoir, near his Interlachen home on property originally owned by his maternal grandparents, Madge and Perry Strickland. He and his family also spent many happy days on Florida’s coastal waters.

Preceding him in death were his wife, Ann Samball and sister, Karen Samball, and his Aunt Francis and Uncle Luther Strickland, who were particularly meaningful in his life.

He is survived by two sons, Jace Samball and Michael Samball; a brother, Mike Samball; and a granddaughter, Opal Ann Samball.

Friends and neighbors are invited to attend a memorial service at Masters Funeral Home in Palatka at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 10, 2021 with Pastor Rick McClure officiating. The family will begin receiving friends one hour prior to the service. There will be no burial services. There will also be a celebration of his life at a future date.
